what is this? A real fruit fly brain. The dots are all 138,639 neurons of the adult Drosophila connectome (FlyWire release 783, Princeton + Google), wired by their 2.7 million measured connections of 5+ synapses, simulated as leaky integrate-and-fire neurons on your device with the constants from Shiu et al. 2024. Every buy drives the sugar-sensing taste neurons (LB3) and the 307 PAM dopamine neurons, the fly's reward signal. Sells never reach the fly; it only ever gets rewarded. The proboscis extends because sugar input reaches the motor neurons MN10/MNx01/MNx03 through the wiring alone, the published benchmark of this model. Dopamine that reaches a mushroom-body compartment weakens the Kenyon cell → MBON synapses that were just active, which is how a real fly stores a reward memory; the memory fades over about 15 minutes. Engineering, not biology: the tonic 2 Hz chatter on 1% of central-brain neurons, spike-frequency adaptation and a slow homeostatic gain control so the wiring does not lock into permanent loops (and if it still seizes for 2 s, the unstimulated neurons are put back to rest), the plasticity rate, and the cartoon body.
